Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa — As has been the case in the past, it has begun to become the norm for former standout Quad City Steamwheelers players to move on to the Arena Football League. For the fourth time in less than two weeks, a former Steamwheelers player has signed an AFL contract.

Former Steamwheelers offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jason Berger signed with the Columbus Destroyers, as announced late Monday evening by the Arena Football League office.

Berger, who played for the Steamwheelers in 2001, played in seven games and recorded five tackles (one solo) as well as a tackle for loss and two pass deflections. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound, Berger helped guide the Steamwheelers to their second straight ArenaCup title that season.

He then went on to play two seasons with the Macon Knights of the af2, where he starter in all 38 game she appeared in. While there, Berger accounted for 21.5 tackles (16 solo), four tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

He then moved up to the AFL in 2004 with the then expansion New Orleans VooDoo and started the first two games of the season.

Berger was an All-Big West Conference guard at New Mexico State and played the 1996-1999 seasons. In 1998, he was an All-Big West Conference second-team selection.

As the winningest team in arenafootball2 history with a five-year overall record of 71-17, the Steamwheelers have been one of the top af2 teams in producing AFL talent.

The Steamwheelers are gearing up for their sixth season, as a charter member of the af2. The 2005 af2 season is set to kickoff the first weekend of April and a schedule is expected in mid-November. Season tickets are on sale right now and can be purchased by calling the Steamwheelers office at (563) 324-4888 or toll free at 1-866-STEAMTIX (78326849).
