Edenton Steamers News Release
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C - The Coastal Plain League announced today that Edenton Steamers WebPass broadcaster Danny Angel (photo courtesy of Raleigh News and Observer) has been named the 2013 CPL Broadcaster of the Year.
Angel becomes the first CPL broadcaster to repeat with this honor as he won it following the 2012 season as well. The league saw improvement across the board this year for its broadcasts, but it was Angel who was selected after fans and officials voted. With regards to the fans vote, the league had over 400 entries with Angel taking 32% of them. He returned to the press box in Edenton in 2013 for his third summer as the voice of the Steamers.
Angel, known for his detailed and informative broadcasts, also does a good job of incorporating interviews of coaches and players, as well as giving fans interesting tidbits such as "Today's Useless Fact" or "This Date in Baseball History".
Here's just a sampling of what some of the fans had to say about Angel's broadcasts:
"Danny paints a good picture of the community by the commercials he does. It gives the WebPass listeners an inkling of what is in Edenton."
"Danny keeps his audience abreast of what is going on throughout the whole league."
"Danny has a real knowledge of baseball. Not just the Steamers or the CPL, but the actual game of baseball and all the small things that sometimes get overlooked these days."
Angel, now has six years of broadcasting experience, including five years exclusively covering baseball. After the 2011 Steamers summer season concluded, Angel signed on to work in the California Winter League in Palm Springs, Calif., for the winter months of January and February. In the CWL he served under the lead play-by-play man of the Las Vegas 51's, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, Russ Langer in much the same fashion as in 2011 for the Steamers. In 2010, Angel served as the media relations director and play-by-play broadcaster for the Laredo Broncos Baseball Club of the independent United League.
After graduating from San Francisco State University with a degree in Audio Production and Media Performance, Angel made the jump to the diamond in 2009 when he was hired as the number two broadcaster for the short season single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Aberdeen IronBirds of the New York-Penn League. In 2008, while a senior attending San Francisco State University, Angel got his first taste of live broadcasting when he served as the primary play-by-play man for the varsity women Gators basketball team, while also working as the color commentator for the varsity men Gators basketball team.
Angel grew up in Sonoma, Calif., where he attended Sonoma Valley High School, graduating in 2001. He follows in his uncle's (Joe Angel) broadcasting footsteps, who is the radio play-by-play man for the Baltimore Orioles.
