Angel City Football Club Reveals 2023 Secondary Kit Entitled "REPRESENT"

March 16, 2023 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)
Angel City FC News Release

LOS ANGELES - Today, Angel City Football Club revealed its secondary kit for the 2023 NWSL Season, appropriately named "Represent." The jersey features a map of the greater Los Angeles area and coastline, wrapping around the front and back of the garment. The map design consists of a series of small shapes of many sizes - known as a "halftone pattern." Each shape represents the diverse individuals, neighborhoods, and cultures that form Los Angeles and call it home.

The jersey is now available for purchase at www.angelcity.com/shop starting at $95.00.

Upon purchase, fans can personalize their jersey to express their own LA story with custom patches designed by local creators for an additional $7 each. Fans who purchase the new jersey with Klarna in the first 24 hours of on sale, will receive $7 off their purchase to cover the cost of their first patch of their choice.

Fans will be able to buy one unit of each patch style when they purchase the new kit. Patch designers include actress and ACFC investor Gabrielle Union (Black Vision Patch), Michael Pak and Duy Nguyen of Love Hour (Flavors of LA Patch), and Rachel Gomez of Viva La Bonita (Nuestras Alas Patch).

"LA is the sum of infinite parts - diverse cultures, neighborhoods, and individuals united by this great city," said ACFC Co-Founder and President Julie Uhrman. "We are proud that the Angel City fan base reflects the diversity of Los Angeles. There is space for everyone at ACFC, just as there is space for everyone in LA. Our community is our superpower, and we cannot wait to see our team and fans represent in this incredible jersey."

The jersey is made by Nike with sustainable, 100% recycled polyester fibers. It features breathable side panels, Nike Dri-FIT technology, and a unique neckline. The jersey is in ACFC's own Armour gray, with accents of Sol Rosa, the club's other signature color. The Nike swoosh, sponsors (DoorDash across front-of-kit, Sprouts Farmers Market adorning the back, and Birdies on the right sleeve), player name and number are black.

VOLEMOS

One Angeleno's individual story comes to life in the team mantra, "Volemos," found on the nape of the neck, designed by Rachel Gomez, Latina Streetwear designer and founder of local LA brand Viva La Bonita. Gomez also created one of the Angeleno patches, the Nuestra Alas patch.

ANGELENO PATCH COLLECTION

In a first for ACFC, the club will offer a collection of Angeleno patches designed by creators who represent 11 of the unique cultures, neighborhoods, and identities that make up LA. These patches allow purchasers to customize the jersey to represent who they are and reflect their personal journey.

When purchasing the jersey on angelcity.com/shop, fans can choose one of the 11 patches for an added cost of $7, which can be pressed on the left sleeve, as well as purchase additional patches.

"Being part of the patch program is definitely a dream come true," said Rachel Gomez, founder of Viva La Bonita, who created the Nuestras Alas patch. "The inspiration behind the patch is to remind people that your dreams aren't just something that happen. To encourage people not to give up and keep pushing forward because those dreams are yours to navigate you through your future. Me being a part of this collaboration is proof that your dreams will take you to the most unexpected places. I am so grateful to be a part of this."

"My inspiration for the patch was trying to encapsulate the energy and the spirit and the joy of LA as a whole. Really the spirit of what it is like to be an Angeleno," said Oto-Abasi Attah of Crenshaw Dairy Mart, who created the Guardian Angel Patch. "I'm very excited to be a part of this program. It is a really great way to build community and highlight certain communities, which is very needed."

"For us as indigenous people, being a part of this program means so much. We've been working hard to create visibility of our existence. And the patch is one more step to saying we are here as indigenous people," said Odilia Romero of CIELO, who co-designed the DIIDXA' patch."Language is everything. It is a human right. That's why the writing is DIIDXA', which means 'word' in Zapotec. One word makes a difference in your life. One word can change your freedom. And of course, because even though we're indigenous people from south of the border, LA's our home now."

The creators include (For a full list of creators and imagery of the patches, see below or clickHERE):

Gabrielle Union/Actress, activist and ACFC Investor (Black Vision Patch) - Gabrielle Union is an American actress, producer, advocate, and New York Times best-selling author who has been vocal about issues related to racial and LGBTQ+ injustice and systemic racism. Union continues to advocate for greater diversity and representation in media and is a role model for many. Union worked closely with Angel City on the design of the patch, providing art direction and inspiration.

Rachel Gomez/Viva La Bonita (Nuestras Alas Patch) - Rachel Gomez is the founder of Viva La Bonita, a streetwear brand inspired by the life of the everyday Latina woman growing up in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. Rachel uses her brand to educate others on Latinx culture in a way that allows people to ask questions, helps them appreciate the culture, and positively empowers her people.

Michael Pak & Duy Nguyen/Love Hour (Flavors of LA Patch) - Mike Pak and Duy Nguyen - two local leaders who define a certain scrappy and stylish altruism emblematic of their Koreatown neighborhood's entrepreneurial spirit. Their own proclivities towards design and fashion and a desire to connect and support their community through food and running, that they fell into by accident, have birthed numerous businesses and organizations.

Oto-Abasi Attah/Crenshaw Dairy Mart (Guardian Angel Patch) - Oto-Abasi Attah, an artist from Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, raised in Los Angeles, uses his works to depict his experiences growing up with influences from both cultures. His art is for those in the process of understanding and changing their present. He wants to rewrite the narrative and create a new world once we heal and understand ourselves. Oto-Abasi is part of the inaugural cohort of the Crenshaw Dairy Mart Fellowship for Abolition and the Advancement of the Creative Economy (CDM-FAACE).

MORE THAN A JERSEY

In addition to the jersey's unique symbolism, it is arguably one of the most impactful kits in global soccer. Over the next several years, ACFC will reallocate millions of dollars into the community in partnership with the team's three jersey partners: DoorDash, Birdies, and Sprouts Farmers Market. This impact is made possible through the team's groundbreaking sponsorship model, where 10% of the sponsorship value directly benefits the community.

Further, 10 percent of the sales of the primary and secondary jerseys with the number 22 on the back will fuel the Player 22 Future Program. This one-of-a-kind fund creates pathways to support any former National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) player interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry. Whether coaching, refereeing, working in media, or front office roles, the fund's ultimate goal is to prepare players for entry into the workforce following their professional soccer career. Front-of-kit sponsor DoorDash made their foray into professional soccer with a significant multi-year commitment, the largest sponsorship in NWSL history. In 2022 alone, alongside All Peoples Community Center and the LA LGBT Center, ACFC and DoorDash combatted food insecurity in Los Angeles by delivering nearly 500,000 meals to communities in need.

Female-founded direct-to-consumer footwear brand Birdies is the exclusive sleeve-of-kit sponsor supporting ACFC's mission to empower girls and women to pursue their dreams. Together in 2021, ACFC and Birdies launched the one-of-a-kind SOAR Internship Program, a six-week paid internship and rotational program for eight high school juniors and seniors pursuing education and careers in entertainment, the arts, sports, and business. Over the program's first two years, interns spent over 150 collective hours with executives from across both companies and received more than $30,000 in educational grants.

Back-of-kit sponsor, Sprouts Farmers Market joined ACFC to address nutrition education and fresh food accessthroughout Los Angeles. Since the partnership's inception, ACFC and Sprouts have worked with The Garden School Foundation to refurbish and provide essential supplies and equipment for eight Los Angeles Unified School District school gardens. Together ACFC and Sprouts have delivered more than 2,000 hours of garden-based education to over 500 elementary school children and have provided those children and their families with over 120,000 servings of free, healthy produce through Food Forward and The Garden School Foundation's pop-up farmers markets at 24th St. Elementary School in Downtown Los Angeles.
