Andrew Peeke Named USHL Scholar-Athlete of the Year

The United States Hockey League today announced that Andrew Peeke of the Gamblers has been named the 2016 recipient of the USHL Scholar-Athlete Award and USHL All-Academic Team.

It was the first USHL season for Peeke after the Gamblers selected him in the 2014 USHL Phase I Draft in the 2nd round, 26th overall. The Parkland, FL native is a product of the Selects Hockey Academy (USPHL), where he spent two seasons with Selects, including their 2014 USPHL Championship campaign.

Peeke recently graduated from Ashwaubenon High School in Green Bay, WI, finishing his four years with a cumulative grand-point-average of 4.12 on a 4.00 scale and was ranked 13th out of 254 students in his graduating class. In addition to his course work and athletic achievements, Peeke was able to complete six times the amount of community service required to graduate with his peers. Peeke represented his country this season skating for USA Hockey at the World Junior A Challenge, where he and his teammates won a bronze medal, in addition to representing the United States at the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament last season.

Peeke was enrolled in a rigorous course schedule that included AP Statistics, Environmental Science, Grammar and Writing, and a domestic politics and citizenship class. Despite being allowed a modified schedule for hockey, Peeke graduated with an three credit hours more than was required to graduate.

Peeke's high school counselor Heidi Beimer noted the Peeke can frequently be seen taking time to talk to his teachers and peers, and has always been a role model for the community. She also noted the rigorous grading scale in Wisconsin that features one of the nation's highest thresholds for grades awarded.

The University of Notre Dame commit has been featured on NHL Central Scouting rankings all season long as one of the top defenseman in the North America. Peeke was ranked 57th in their most recent ranking. The defenseman finished the season with 30 points in 56 games with a +7 rating. Peeke added two points in four games in Clark Cup Playoffs.
