Anderson's Strong Start Not Enough for Steamers

July 18, 2018 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

For the third time this summer, Ben Anderson tossed a jaw-dropping performance of 10 or more strikeouts on the mound. However, it was not enough to sneak past the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday night at Hicks Field, losing 7-4.

The loss puts Edenton at 4-8 in the closing half of the season, while the Pilots move to 7-4.

Anderson finished with 10 punch-outs in six innings, surrendering just one run on three hits to put his season earned run average to 0.70.

In the second frame, he gave up a RBI single to Trey Martin to tie the game up at 1-1. Following that at-bat, Anderson retired the next 12 Pilots. He only gave Peninsula one more baserunner all night, but the Pilots stored their offensive barrage for the final two innings.

In the eighth, Charles Hall got the first two hitters out. Down 3-1 on the scoreboard, Peninsula's Cole Prestegard blasted a solo shot to bring the contest within one run. Jordan Santos and Matthew Schwarz continued the inning to set up Trey Martin for a two-run base hit to take the 4-3 lead.

And then, in the ninth, the Steamers pitching staff walked six batters, which equaled out to three more Pilots runs.

It was too much for the Clams to come back from in the home half of the ninth inning. Devon Gardner made it interesting with a RBI infield single with two outs, but that was all Edenton could muster.

Bryson Worrell, Zane Harris and Ben Whetstone all went deep for Edenton on solo home runs.

Rich Ciufo added two hits, including a double.

Hall was tabbed with the loss in two innings out of the bullpen. He struck out three and handed Peninsula three runs.

Jackson Wark picked up the win in 2.2 innings out of relief. He fanned five Steamers with one run allowed.

The Clams return to action on Thursday night against the Wilson Tobs set for a 7 p.m. start at Fleming Stadium.
