Anderson Names Final Four
November 17, 2006 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release
ANDERSON, SC--After sorting through hundreds of entries for the South Coast League's "Name the Team" contest in Anderson, South Carolina, the franchise has narrowed its list to a final four.
"The South Coast League wants the people of Anderson County to be greatly involved with the development of their franchise. Now that we have our final four designs, it becomes extremely exciting for everyone involved," adds SCL Chief Executive Officer Jamie Toole.
Fans are encouraged to log onto www.andersonprobaseball.com and cast their vote via an online submission form. "Name the Team" votes may also be submitted by emailing your choice directly to info@andersonprobaseball.com, along with your name and phone number.
Each name and logo holds special significance for the city of Anderson and attempt to incorporate as much of the city into the team, and vice versa.
Three of the designs all play off of the nickname, "The Electric City" - with the Surge, Sparks, and Jolt all tying in to the city's heritage as the first city in the south with unlimited electric power. Also, the color scheme for the Jolt shares similarities with the city's official colors, green and gold.
The fourth design references former big leaguer "Shoeless" Joe Jackson who earned his nickname while playing a ballgame in Anderson, SC. In 1908, Joe was in Anderson and wore a new pair of spikes that had rubbed blisters on his feet, so he wanted to sit out for that game. However, his team was short some players and he had to play. Joe tried to play in the new spikes, but because they hurt his feet, Joe took the spikes off and played in just his socks. He came up to bat, hit a triple, and as he was pulling up at third, an Anderson fan hollered "You shoeless son of a gun you!" The name stuck.
"Anderson is a great baseball community, and the people have definitely responded to this contest," said VP of South Carolina Operations Garrett Ball. "We're pleased with the results, and are looking forward to hearing from the fans again, as they select a name that truly encompasses the city of Anderson."
The winning entrant will receive two 2007 season tickets, Anderson Baseball Merchandise and the right to present the 2007 Opening Day lineup card to the umpire prior to the start of the game.
The Anderson ball club will take the field at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Unlike minor league teams that are affiliated, the Independent Anderson franchise will be responsible for scouting, signing and paying their own players. They are one of six charter franchises to begin South Coast League play in May of 2007.
