Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors used a walk-off single to beat the Waterloo Bucks Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-8 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The Anchors record now stands at 9-23.
Alexandria built an early 6-0 lead in the second inning. Nehwon Norkeh doubled to start the inning and scored on an Aaron Gretz single. After two outs were recorded, Rickey Sanchez hit a solo homer to put the Anchors ahead 2-0. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases and a base hit from Kris Goodman brought in two more runs. Another single from Roman Collins loaded the bases again, for Norkeh, who singled in two and put the Anchors up 6-0.
The lead deteriorated as the Bucks put up two runs in the top of the third against Andrew Thome. The Alexandria pitching staff had a hard time finding the plate as they issued 11 free passes and two of those walks led to two more runs for the Bucks in the fifth against Aaron Rozek.
Sean Terres came into pitch and he had two outs and a runner on first in the top of the 6th and back-to-back homers by David Kerian and Will Sparks put the Bucks up 7-6. Another run would come in for Waterloo in the seventh to increase their lead to two.
Gretz and Ryan Busch both collected hits to start the eighth and put runners on the corners. Following a strikeout, Cam Duzenack collected an RBI with a ground out to pull the Anchors within one.
That set the stage for the dramatics in the ninth. Goodman singled with one out and would move to second on a Collins base hit. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position and Norkeh delivered the game-winning hit to bring in both runners and give the Blue Anchors a 9-8 victory.
Thome lasted just 3.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits and six walks with two strikeouts. Rozek pitched one inning allowing two runs on one hit and two walks. In 2.2 innings, Terres allowed four runs on five hits and a walk. Pete Gaustad pitched 1.2 scoreless innings allowing three hits and two walks. Robbie Mouton (1-3) picked up the win pitching 1/3 of an inning.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Newon Norkeh (DH) - Back from injury, Norkeh had a great day at the plate. He had three hits and four RBI as well as a run scored. His walk-off single gave the Anchors their second walk-off victory of the year.
