Anchorage Polishes off Sweep of Bakersfield

December 8, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Christian Soucy recorded 29 saves in regulation and six more in the shootout as Anchorage completed a three-game sweep of Bakersfield by a score of 3-2 Sunday at Sullivan Arena.

Anchorage looked flat and uninspired for most of the first period, quickly falling behind 2-0 on goals by Paul Willett and Jordan Roach of Bakersfield, who registered the game's first ten shots on goal. But J.J. Wrobel's one-timer with only 1:14 left in the period after a beautiful tic-tac-toe sequence with Jiri Jakes seemed to arouse the Aces, who trailed only 2-1 despite being outshot 14-4 in the opening 20 minutes.

Kimbi Daniels tied the game 2-2 at 14:02 of the second period directly off a turnover by the Condors' Paul Rosebush. Anchorage, playing its fifth game in six nights, and Bakersfield, its fourth game in six with a long travel day in between, struggled through a scoreless third period and into another shootout, the second of the series. The Condors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the extra session on goals by Christoffer Norgren and Christian Skoryna, but needing one more save to wrap up the victory, Bakersfield (13-6-2) never got it, as Wrobel and Jakes kept the Aces alive with goals in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively.

Finally, in the eighth round, after four straight saves by Soucy, defenseman Mike Marostega snapped a wrist shot past Condor goaltender Fredrik Jensen to wrap up Anchorage's first three-game sweep since February 9-12, 2000, against Idaho. The Aces (7-16-1) have won three games in a row for the first time all year and are now a perfect 4-0 against Bakersfield, with all four games being decided by a single goal. Anchorage hits the road next weekend for a Friday tilt at 6:00 p.m. AST in San Diego and a Saturday night rematch with the Condors at 6:00 p.m. AST.

All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
