Amerks, K-Hawks' 'Week of Caring' Kicks off This Afternoon
May 9, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans and Knighthawks will donate over $44,000 in charitable monies raised throughout the 2010-11 season over the course of this week as part of the teams' "Week of Caring" campaign.
"Our fans are the real champions through their support of the Rochester Knighthawks/Amerks Charitable Foundation initiatives throughout the year," said Amerks and Knighthawks President Lewis Staats. "We are proud to work with organizations that provide much needed services and support in Rochester and surrounding communities."
Starting with a check presentation of $18,633.96 to the Urology Associates of Rochester (UAR) this afternoon, the week-long campaign will see all proceeds raised presented to several charitable organizations and other community outreach programs through the Knighthawks/Amerks Charitable Foundation, Inc. The foundation successfully raised over $63,000 in funds for local charities this season.
The Amerks and Knighthawks partnered with the Urology Associates of Rochester this past season in their "Dash for Dads - Rochester" campaign, an educational incentive to help spread awareness and understating of prostate cancer. The foundation raised the money this season with the auctioning off of the specially made game-worn blue jerseys in support of the cause.
"Urology Associates of Rochester is extremely grateful to the Amerks and the Knighthawks for partnering with UAR to help raise these generous donations from the fans," said David Dever, M.D., Urology Associates of Rochester. "These funds, which will benefit Zerocancer.org and the Lipson Cancer Center, will help to raise awareness of prostate cancer and to reduce the prevalence of the disease in the Greater Rochester area."
Other community organizations receiving donations include WEASE Cares, Camp Good Days, Hillside Family of Agencies, CURE Childhood Cancer Association, Stephens Media Group, Stepping Stone, Dash for Dads - Rochester, the Craig Charron Foundation and Kids Adjusting Through Support (KATS).
