American Association Expands to 14 Teams, Will Play 100-Game Schedule
October 13, 2010 - American Association (AA)
St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (October 13, 2010) - Some old rivalries will be renewed in 2011 as four Northern League teams have joined the American Association to form a 14-team league, the American Association announced Wednesday. The league also announced that four games have been added to the schedule for a 100-game season.
Former St. Paul Saints rivals the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks along with the Gary-SouthShore RailCats and Kansas City T-Bones have left the Northern League to join the 10 teams currently in the American Association. Along with the addition of the teams, the schedule has expanded from 96 games to 100 games (50 home, 50 road) giving each team two extra home games and two extra road games.
"The addition of these four teams is a win for all involved," said Derek Sharrer, Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager. "We're most excited for our fans, though, as we look forward to renewing some of our most traditional rivalries."
The league will now be divided into three divisions. The Saints, Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants, Goldeyes and RedHawks will make up the North Division. The Central Division will include the RailCats, T-Bones, Lincoln Saltdogs, Sioux City Explorers and Wichita Wingnuts. The South Division will remain the same with the El Paso Diablos, Fort Worth Cats, Grand Prairie AirHogs, Pensacola Pelicans and Shreveport-Bossier Captains.
"It's an exciting day for the American Association," said American Association Commissioner Miles Wolff said. "We're adding four clubs that have excellent operations on and off the field, and it's going to make us a very strong 14-team league."
The Saints were part of the Northern League from their inaugural season of 1993 until they left following the 2005 season along with the Sioux Falls Canaries (now the Pheasants), Explorers and Saltdogs. Those four teams, along with the St. Joseph Blacksnakes made up the new American Association's North Division and joined five teams from the Central Baseball League (Coastal Bend Aviators, El Paso Diablos, Pensacola Pelicans, Fort Worth Cats and Shreveport Sports) to comprise the South Division.
The schedule for the new American Association will be released at a later date.
