Ambassadors Win Again in Last At Bat, 8-7 over Quebec

August 21, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release

For the second straight night, Jorge Diaz drove in the game winning run for the Ambassadors in their last at-bat, this time with a bases loaded walk, to beat Quebec les Capitales 8-7 Thursday night in Allentown.

Quebec got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three run home run by Carlos Rodriguez off Ambassador starter Miguel Perez to left-center, his league leading twenty first. He is now two home runs ahead of Vic Davilla, who is chasing a triple crown.

The Ambassadors responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, both runs scoring on a triple from Jorge Diaz.

Quebec would add another run in the second, but the Ambassadors would rally and tie the game in the fifth inning. Ben Rosenthal began the inning with a single off Quebec starter Jason Cly, then after a Jason Williams sacrifice bunt, Cedrick Harris tripled. He would score on a Vic Davilla sacrifice fly after Ender Gonzalez was hit by a pitch.

The tie would be short-lived. Quebec added a run in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Pappy Ndungidi and Galindo Gomez. Quebec added two more runs off reliever Carlos Gomez in the seventh to take a three run lead.

The Ambassadors rallied again in the bottom of the seventh. Rosenthal began the inning with a double. That ended the outing for Cly and Dan Marchetti came in. After getting Williams to fly-out, Harris drove in Rosenthal with a single and Gonzalez was hit by another pitch. Davilla then hit a ground ball to first that firstbaseman Gomez threw into left field. Harris and Gonzalez scored to tie the game at 7.

It was still 7-7 when the bottom of the ninth came around. Williams began the inning with a single, then Harris bunted him to second. Ender Gonzalez had an infield single, and with runners at the corners, Quebec intentionally walked Davilla. Greg Schmidt hit a chopper to third that Osmani Garcia came home with and got Williams out at the plate. With two out, Jorge Diaz walked on four pitches to drive in Gonzalez and end the game.

Perry Cunningham picked up his first professional win, pitching two innings and allowing one hit and a walk. He is 1-0. Marchetti took the loss, he is 2-3. Eddie Lantigua left the game in the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch on his wrist. The win is the second in a row for the Ambassadors, who are now 14-23. Quebec falls to 21-14. The two teams play again tomorrow night with John Dillinger going up against Jordy Alexander. It is Uncle Baseball Bobble-head night.
