Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors Professional Baseball team has named Olympic cyclist Leigh Barczewski President of the team. This is a new position for the Ambassadors who in the past have relied on a General Manager to run all team operations. According to Owner, Peter Karoly " I have plenty of people who know baseball I need someone who understands the business side of things. Leigh has the background to fit perfectly into our organization."
Leigh, a native of West Allis, WI came to the Lehigh Valley in 1976 as part of the Olympic cycling team, racing and training at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. Over the next four years Leigh became the top cyclist in the U.S. winning four national titles, placing 5th in the Pan American Games and in 1978 winning a silver medal in the World Cycling Championships. He retired from cycling in 1980 and went immediately into the management of the Velodrome. Over the years Leigh has specialized in sports marketing and sports promotion, additionally he spent several years as a financial advisor for the Wall Street firm of Morgan Stanley. Asked about his new position Leigh responded, " I am extremely excited about this opportunity. From everything I've learned about this team it's a quality organization from top to bottom. Mr. Karoly has a vision for this team, the city of Allentown and the Lehigh Valley. I'm proud to be part his dream to improve the team and the quality of life in Allentown and the Lehigh Valley."
In other front office moves, Michael Jermain has been promoted from Assistant General Manager to General Manager upon the resignation of Jeff Fisher. Mike originally from San Bernardino, CA was most recently employed as General Manager of the Petersburg Generals of the Costal Plain League. The Generals are located in Petersburg, VA. Prior to his stints with the Generals and the Ambassadors Mike spent 13 years in front office management for the Coastal Plain League in Hampton, VA, Thomasville, NC and minor league affiliates of the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mike takes over a team with a record of 26-64 in 2002. " I know I have my work cut out for me but with the return of Ed Ott as manager, Rick Wise as pitching coach and some of our key players, I feel we will compete for the Northeast League Championship."
