Allentown Ambassadors News Release
Elmira Pioneer starting pitcher Matt Vincent had a perfect game thorugh five and a third innings, helping pace the Pioneers to a 7-2 victory over the Allentown Ambassadors Tuesday night in Allentown.
Vincent had his bid for a perfect game broken up with one out in the sixth inning, when Jason Williams hit a solo home run for the Ambassadors to left field. It was Williams' first home run of the season and cut the Elmira lead to 4-1.
Elmira got out to a 4-0 lead off Ambassador starter Nolan Fry. The Pioneers scored three in the third inning, with Dennis Abreu hitting a two run home run to left, his first of the year, and Scott Hunter hitting an RBI double. Elmira added a run in the sixth on a Ryan Lehr solo home down the right field line, his fourth of the season.
Fry would leave the game with the bases loaded and no one out in the seventh, but John Boker came in and struck out Hunter and Brian Jones, and then got Ryan Lehr to ground out to end the inning without allowing any runs.
But Boker came out in the eighth and walked Alex Marconi to start the inning, then gave up a bunt single to Ryan Webb. Rolando Bello would double to score two, then Dennis Abreu singled, with Bello stopping at third. Cleatus Davidson then hit a sacrfice fly to score Bello. Boker would exit after giving up a hit to Rafael Alvarez, and Justin Keeling came in and promptly hit Hunter in the side. But he got Jones to ground into a double play to end the inning.
The Ambassadors would add a run in the eighth, but Elmira had more than enough to come away with the 7-2 victory. Vincent pitched six innings allowing a run on two hits and striking out six to get the win. He is now 3-3. Fry took the loss, he is 4-5. Abreu finished the game 4-5 with a double, a home run, a run scored and two RBI. Davidson was 2-2, with a double, a run, an RBI, two sacrifice hits, one sacrifice fly and a stolen base.
The win keeps the Pioneers in first place in the South Division. They are now 13-9 in the second half. The Ambassadors remain in fourth, they are now 8-15, five and a half games behind Elmira. The two teams play the final game of the series tomorrow, with Chris Kelly taking the mound for the Ambassadors. He'll be opposed by Elmira ace Brian Edmondson.
