Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors fell behind 2-1 to New Jersey early, and the Jackals added three runs in the eighth to pull away for a 5-1 win Friday night in Allentown.
Both New Jersey starter Joel Bennett and Allentown starter Miguel Perez gave up solo home runs in the first inning. John Anderson hit the home run for New Jersey, his second of the season, while Vic Davilla hit his seventeenth for the Ambassadors.
The Jackals would add another run in the third inning when Joe Kerrigan doubled with two out, followed by a David Brinkley single to drive him in. Both starters pitched extremely well, with Bennett going seven innings allowing six hits and just the one run, walking two and striking out six.
Perez pitched into the eighth inning. He left after hitting Brinkley and giving up a hit to Grijak with Brinkley advancing to third on the play. Travis Bailey then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Justin Keeling came in to pitch, but could not hold back the Jackals. Scott Samuels singled. After Carlos Pagan popped out, Chris Rowan and Craig Conway followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-1.
The Ambassadors tried to make it interesting in the ninth, and had runners at first and third with two outs, but Kevin Moore, pinch hitting for Ender Gonzalez who left with a groin muscle injury, lined out to right center field to end the game.
Bennett picked up the win, he is now 5-1. Perez took the loss, he is now 6-5. The Ambassadors fall to 12-20 in the second half with the defeat, while the Jackals improve to 16-15 and are now just a half game out of first place. Prior to the game, both Ed Ott and Joe Calfapietra were inducted into the Ambassador Hall of Fame, although Ott did not stick around for long. He was thrown out in the third inning. The two teams play their final game of the season series tomorrow night at Bicentennial Park. Nolan Fry will pitch for the Ambassadors, while Aaron Myers goes for the Jackals. It is Military Appreciation Night. All current U.S. military personnel with valid I.D. will, along with their families, get in for free. In addition, any fan bringing a non-perishable item to the game will get $1 off the price of admission. Everything collected will be sent to the troops in Iraq.
