Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors scored the go ahead run in the eighth inning on a balk by Elmira pitcher Ken Kawabata and beat the Pioneers 4-2 in Elmira, New York on Wednesday night.

The Ambassadors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Schuyler Doakes RBI single. The hit scored Greg Schmidt, who reached base after being hit by Elmira starter Dan Head.

The Ambassadors added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Jorge Diaz led-off with a double, and after Ender Gonzalez grounded out, Marlon Roche doubled home Diaz. Diaz finished the night 2-4 with a run scored.

Ambassador starter Tim Davidson worked his way in and out of trouble in four of the first five innings, stranding seven runners. In the bottom of the sixth, Davidson got Brian Jones to pop-out for the first out, but then Scott Hunter singled. Davidson thought he had Hunter picked-off, but home plate umpire Todd Shield ruled a balk, and Hunter took second. A visibly upset Davidson then gave up a two run home run to Rafael Alvarez to tie the game. The Ambassadors had thought that Elmira starter Head had balked earlier in the game when he picked Doakes off first, but argued to no avail.

The game stayed tied until the eighth, when Doakes led off with a walk and was then sacrificed to second by Diaz. Doakes moved to third on an Ender Gonzalez gorundout, and then Roche was hit by a pitch. With Davilla at the plate, Doakes took off from third. A flustered Kawabata threw home, but was called for a balk. Roche scored later in the inning on an error by Elmira third-baseman Rolando Bello.

Carlos Gonzalez pitched two scoreless innings allowing only one hit and striking out three to get the win, his first of the season. Wade Clark came in to pitch the ninth and made it interesting, loading the bases with no one out, but got the save, his first of the year.

The win evens the Ambassadors' record at 2-2. Elmira fell to 3-4. The Ambassadors have tomorrow off, then start a six-game homestand on Friday night against Berkshire. Game time is 7:05.
