Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, May 29-Right-hander Anthony Chavez pitched a complete-game as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Newark Bears, 5-2, Thursday night at Riverfront Stadium. The Bears (13-13) have now lost a season-high three games in a row and have fallen to .500 on the season.
Chavez (3-2) carried a shutout into the 9th inning, but he allowed a two-run home run to Bears first baseman Francisco Lebron to fall two outs shy of his first career shutout. Chavez finished with a six-hitter, striking out three batters and walking only two.
Former major league right-hander Jose Lima (4-1) suffered his first defeat of the season, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits. Lima struck out 5 batters and walked one.
In the 2nd inning Lima allowed a solo home run to Surf catcher Emison Soto, his 2nd of the season. In the 5th inning Lima gave up four runs, only two of which were earned because of a Jack Santora error. The big blow in the inning was a two-run single by right fielder Shane Monohan.
The Bears thought that they had scored a run in the 3rd inning, but Mike Piercy was called out at the plate as he tried to score from second base on Santora's single to left field. Trey Beamon's threw Piercy out at home and Newark manager Bill Madlock was ejected from the game arguing the call, his first ejection of the season.
Bears relievers Andy Hazlett and Steve Gagliano combined to throw four shutout innings, with Gagliano striking out three batters in two innings of work.
The Bears and Surf will play the middle game of their three-game series Friday night at The Den. Tom Stepka (1-2) will pitch for Newark and Andy High (2-1) goes for Atlantic City.
