Amazing Second Powers Thunder

December 3, 2010 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

A string of four unanswered goals in a span of 5:55 highlighted a second period that saw Wichita overcome a 3-1 deficit. Down 1-0, Kory Scoran connected on a power play goal 38 seconds into the frame. Scoran battled for a loose puck just outside of the crease, beating Eagles' goaltender Andrew Penner to tie the game. Colorado took a 3-1 lead on scores from Aaron Schneekloth at 3:59 and Kip Workman at 7:31. Both came on battles in front of the Thunder crease.

Braden Desmet took a boarding penalty at the 8:09 mark in the second that eventually led to the ejection of Eagles' Head Coach Chris Stewart and a full two minutes of five-on-three power play for the Thunder. At 9:00, A.J. Gale cleaned up his own rebound, beating Penner to his right and pull the Thunder within one. Scoran tied the game with his second goal of the night at 13:07, shooting from the bottom of the left faceoff circle.

Jesse Bennefield gave the Thunder a 4-3 lead at 13:58, skating around a Colorado defender before cutting to the far side of the crease and beating Penner to his left. Bennefield set up a backdoor pass that was buried by Aaron Davis at 14:55 for Wichita's fourth consecutive goal. Schneekloth scored his second of the game at 15:48 during Colorado's first power play to cut the lead to 5-4.

Wichita stepped up defensively in the third, blanking the Eagles on eight shots and turning aside a power play to preserve the win.

The Eagles led after a high-flying, but low-scoring first period on a goal from Brett Thurston at 14:53. After Gelinas played the puck off the near half boards, Thurston grabbed it and shot into the vacated Thunder net. The teams battled throughout the first without taking a single penalty.

Marc-Antoine Gelinas earned the win, saving 30 of 34. Penner took the loss, stopping 27 of 32. Wichita finished the game 3 for 7 on the power play and has scored a power play goal in eight straight games. The win extended the Thunder's streak to nine straight home games with at least one point. It was also the first time since March of 2005 that the Thunder scored five or more goals in four consecutive games. The start of the game was delayed 25 minutes.

The Thunder travels to Mississippi on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. match against the RiverKings. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and Sports Radio 1550 KKLE, as well as worldwide at www.kleyam.com The Thunder returns home on December 10th when they host the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the arena box office at (316) 755-SEAT or visit the Thunder's official website at www.wichitathunder.com
