Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - In a playing career that came to a conclusion celebrating the Shreveport-Bossier Captains' 2010 American Association championship with some teammates who were infants or not even born when it began, Jorge Alvarez saw it all. Now the 43-year-old is finally ready for the next step in his career, as he was named the next field manager of the El Paso Diablos.

Alvarez prepared for his new role as a player-coach with the Captains in 2010, working as the hitting coach under manager Ricky VanAsselberg. His hitters ended up with a fantastic season, with a .307 team average, good for second in the league, with nine players hitting at least .290.

One of those players was Alvarez himself, who was good for a .319 clip, along with four home runs and 44 RBIs. In the postseason, Alvarez had a big home run against Pensacola's Jared Gothreaux in Game 2 of the South Division Championship Series and was one off the team lead with six RBIs in the Captains' eight playoff games.

"Jorge did a great job for us both on and off the field," Captains manager Ricky VanAsselberg said. "I know he could still hit .300 next season too but this is a great opportunity for him and I join the whole Captains organization in wishing him nothing but the best in El Paso."

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Alvarez began his long career with the Dodgers organization in 1987, spending a very productive seven years in the Dodgers and Marlins organizations, including four years of double-A ball, from 1988-1994. He then began his tour through the independent ranks, beginning in Laredo (Texas) of the Texas-Louisiana League in 1995.

After Laredo, Alvarez spent time in Amarillo (TX-LA), Somerset (Atlantic League), Cordoba (Mexico), President (Mexico), Alexandria (Central League), San Angelo (Central League) and two earlier years with Shreveport, in 2003 and '04. He went to El Paso in 2005 and was there until being traded in August 2009.

He finished his career with 1,998 regular season games played, 7,528 at-bats and 2,351 hits for a lifetime batting average of .312 - 15 seasons hitting better than .300. He also had 189 home runs and 1,310 RBIs, not to mention 192 stolen bases.

"Like I said last year, I am so grateful for the opportunity that I got to be a coach with the Captains," Alvarez said. "I loved playing in Shreveport and I will miss everyone there. Thank you for all the support and I'm looking forward to bringing the Diablos to town in 2011."

The 2010 American Association Champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains thank all of the people who made the 2010 regular season such a success.
