Lubbock Renegades News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Lubbock Renegades fell short in their franchise-opener with a 61-26 loss to the Amarillo Dusters Friday night at Cal Farley Coliseum. Quarterback Steve Panella led the way for his Dusters squad as he completed 17-of-29 pass attempts for 214 yards with four touchdowns. Lubbock's Justin Midgett was 16-of-34 with 236 yards passing and two touchdowns in his first af2 start.
The Dusters controlled the contest from start to finish, as they collected 40 points in the first half to Lubbock's 13. The barrage of points came from three Panella touchdown passes and a run for a score also by the fourth-year af2 quarterback. A ten-yard rush from Rich Bellina and a 47-yard interception touchdown return by Terrell Mingo, with under six seconds remaining, completed the 40-point first half for the Dusters.
Lubbock took the early lead as they scored on the opening drive with a touchdown pass to Alvance Robinson for 36 yards. It would be the Renegades only lead of the night as the Dusters were able to score four touchdowns before Lubbock found the endzone a second time. That next time would be a 51-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from James McCoy with 4:41 remaining in the first half.
The Renegades matched their 13-point first half performance with 13 points in the third quarter, as Midgett converted a pass to Joey Hawkins for 20 yards and Preston Hartfield ran from a yard out for a score. Amarillo finished off any hopes of a comeback with three second half trips to the endzone, including a 49 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, which was earned by Jahmal Fenner after he recovered Craig Fulton Jr.'s fumble on the same play.
Lubbock will return to the Hub City for their April 15 home-opener with the Arkansas Twisters with a 3 p.m. kick-off time at City Bank Coliseum.
