June 3, 2019 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls have begun preparations for their 10th season in the North American Hockey League this September.
The Bulls recently concluded Pre-Draft Camps in Brighton, Michigan and Monument, Colorado, and now will participate in another important event, the NAHL Draft that will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1 pm. Fans can follow along with the draft at www.nahldraft.com and as well tune into the free audio provided by the league at www.hockeytv.com. Bulls Head Coach Rocky Russo was thrilled with both Pre-Draft Camps.
"The hospitality in both rinks was second to none and our staff thought the competition was great in both locations," said Russo. "In Michigan, we had a little bit of an older group and some guys that we feel that can play for us right away. In Colorado, it was just a little bit younger and it was very exciting because we had a lot of very good 2002, 2003 players, that although may be a year away from playing for us, will be excellent players and prospects for our group moving forward."
Russo said the end game or the takeaway from these camps is being able to find players that you can Draft or invite to your Main Camp.
"We actually used our final NAPHL Tender this past weekend in Colorado on Caleb Brownell who played for the Rocky Mountain Roughriders," he said. "He is a 6-2, 195 pound left-shot defenseman who was drafted in the 7th round by the Everett Silvertips. If we did not have a camp in Colorado, and had the opportunity to get to know him and spend time with him, we may have missed out on a prospect and a player of that caliber."
Next up for the Bulls and all 26 teams is the NAHL Draft which begins at 1 pm on Tuesday afternoon. Amateur players less than 21 years of age on December 31, 2019 who are not listed on an NAHL team roster or are listed on an NAHL team roster but played less than (10) NAHL regular season and/or playoff games during the 2018-19 season and did not accept a tender from an NAHL team prior to the 2019 NAHL Entry Draft are eligible for selection in the draft.
The Bulls will make eight selections with the first one coming at 25 in the first round. Eligible teams shall make selections in each round in reverse order of their finish in the 2018-19 NAHL regular-season standings. New member clubs (New Mexico Ice Wolves and Maine Nordiques) shall have their order of selection determined by lottery.
The Draft has proven very important to he Bulls success over the years including this past season where defenseman Noah Carlin and goaltender Justin Evenson made significant impacts to the team.
"Everyone puts a huge emphasis on the tender process and certainly it's extremely important. but you look at guys who we were able to acquire from the Draft over the years that have been impact players like Brady Ferguson, Noah Carlin, and Justin Evenson," he said. "We are very prepared for it and excited to make eight selections to add to our roster."
"If we go back and look at the Draft over the past nine years that we have been here in Amarillo, we have a lot of players that have been impactful to our organization that we have acquired through the draft. I find it to be an incredibly important part of our recruiting process, and something we are focused and prepared for."
