October 20, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls received a very special honor over the weekend. The team was named Best Sports Team in the Best Of Amarillo 2015 by the Amarillo Globe News. It's the first time that the Bulls have been the recipient of the award.
In the past five seasons the Bulls have been one of the most successful franchises in Amarillo Hockey History posting nearly 200 wins, including more than 60 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
"We're very excited about receiving this award and want to thank our fans in the panhandle for voting for us," said Vice-President and General Manager Rick Matchett. "This is great for our team and organization to be this year's recipient and we're humbled by the honor."
"We've worked hard over our 5 year history to be a good community partner and this award lets us know that the work paid off. This is a great way to celebrate 20 years of continuous hockey in Amarillo!"
In a short period of time the Bulls have quickly become not only an elite franchise in the North American Hockey League on the ice but off the ice as well. In three of the first four years, the Bulls captured two NAHL Overall regular season championships while establishing a new record for points in a season (99). The Bulls also captured three South Division regular season titles and four playoff crowns.
In 2011-12 the Bulls were chosen as NAHL Organization of the Year, and have received other awards from players being selected to All-NAHL Teams, to individual awards like Defenseman of the Year with John Rey to Dennis Williams being chosen as the 2012-13 Coach Of The Year.
In the first three years the Bulls advanced to the Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament. In 2012-2013, the Bulls capped off an amazing run by collecting the oldest trophy in USA Hockey, the Robertson Cup. It was the first major hockey championship won by an Amarillo team in over 34 years.
Another reason for the Bulls success has been its work off the ice moving on players to the next level. In the first five plus season the Bulls have moved on 56 players to scholarships at the NCAA Division I and Division III level with more expected on the way in the years to come.
What also separates the Amarillo Bulls from many other hockey teams that have been in the city in the past has been its work in the Community giving back. The Bulls have donated more than $300,000 in money through various jerseys auctions and have given in-kind donations of tickets and merchandise to various other causes. In 2012-13, the Bulls helped to build a house for Habitat for Humanity. The Bulls charitable work in the community has also been noticed by the North American Hockey League capturing four Community Service Awards in a row (2010-2011-2014-15).
The Amarillo Bulls will be part of the Best Of Amarillo 2015 Celebration on Thursday night in the Heritage Room of the Amarillo Civic Center. Staff members will be on hand visiting with people and handing out pocket schedules and magnet schedules.
