Amarillo Bulls Announce Cancellation of Season and Robertson Cup Playoffs
March 17, 2020 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
Amarillo, Texas - The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that the current 2019-20 season, including the 2020 NAHL Robertson Cup Playoffs, have been canceled due to the International medical emergency caused by COVID-19 Virus pandemic.
NAHL Commissioner Mark Frankenfeld has issued the following statement: "The NAHL and its Board of Governors did everything in our power to preserve a modified playoff and Robertson Cup Finals to ensure our players had every opportunity to compete for and win a Robertson Cup Championship. The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation of cancelling all events of 50 or more people during the next eight weeks made that reality impossible without dramatically disrupting the rest of our hockey calendar."
The league's decision means that no remaining regular season or Robertson Cup playoff games for the Bulls will be played at the Amarillo Civic Center. The Bulls business office will be open and ready to receive phone calls regarding options for ticket exchanges and/or trade-ins at the start of business hours on Monday, March 23rd.
"Although we are certainly disappointed that we will not have the opportunity to pursue our team's goal of a Robertson Cup, the health and well-being of our players, staff, personnel and fans come first," said Head Coach Rocky Russo. "I pray that we can get this virus under control and begin to move forward with our everyday lives. Until that time, we will do what is best for everyone involved. Hockey is certainly not a priority in a time like this."
"On behalf of the entire Bulls organization, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to our fans, business partners and the entire community of supporters who made the team's 10th anniversary season a success," said Bulls Majority Owner Alberto Fernandez. "Although this is certainly not the ending we anticipated, it does not take away the great memories we all made together that will last forever. Finally, I want to thank the team players and staff who gave it their all both on and off the ice."
The Bulls' season concludes with a 39-10-2-3 record and a second-place finish in the South Division standings. Of the 23-man roster, a total of seven skaters committed to NCAA Division I programs and finished the season with the team. The club also says goodbye to ten 1999-born players who have exhausted their junior eligibility. This marks the final season that a player born in the 20th century will put on an Amarillo Bulls uniform.
In the coming weeks, the NAHL will announce its 2019-20 season awards. The 2020 NAHL Draft is scheduled to take place online at nahl.com on Tuesday, June 2nd at 1pm (central) and can also be seen live on HockeyTV.
