Alvarez, Lynn named Central League players of the month
June 2, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release
San Angelo's Jorge Alvarez and Fort Worth's Kevin Lynn have been named the SLAM Baseball Central League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively.
Alvarez led the league with a .425 batting average in 22 games in the month of May. The Las Terrenas Sanchez, Dominican Republic, native also led the league with 28 RBI, 64 total bases and was tied for the league lead with six home runs. He was tied for second in the CBL with nine doubles and was first with a .736 slugging percentage, helping to keep the Colts in the thick of the first-half race.
Alvarez, 36, is currently in his 18th year of professional baseball and is in his ninth season in the Central/Texas-Louisiana League. Signed as a nondrafted free agent by Los Angeles in 1988, he spent six years in the Dodgers system and one in the Florida Marlins organization, reaching as high as AA, before joining the TLL's Laredo Apaches in 1995. Since then, he has also played for Amarillo, Alexandria and Shreveport in the CBL/TLL, as well as in Taiwan, Mexico, and the Atlantic League. Alvarez was the 2002 CBL MVP with Alexandria, batting .316 and leading the league with 23 home runs and 105 RBI.
Lynn earned the victory in all six of his starts in May for first-place Fort Worth, registering a 2.61 ERA and walking just seven batters in 38 innings of work. His most impressive outing may have been on May 11, when he limited Jackson to no runs on three hits in six innings of work in the Cats' 4-1 victory.
The Augusta, Georgia, native is in his fifth season in professional baseball and his second in the Central League. Last year, Lynn, 26, went 3-1 with a 5.02 ERA for Brockton of the Northeast League. A Clemson University graduate, his first professional season was in 2001 with Kalamazoo of the Frontier League. His other Central League stint came in 2003, when he went 7-9 in 22 games for the Alexandria Aces.
The Player and Pitcher of the Month awards are given out by SLAM Baseball, which offers the largest selection of pro maple bats on the web, as well as a huge assortment of other baseball gear, at www.slambats.com.
