SAN JOSE – Tyler Von schell hit an opposite field single in the bottom of the tenth inning to drive in the winning run for San Jose the Giants' second straight win over Visalia, 3-2.

Visalia scored first for the third time in the series with a run in the third inning. Dan Conway led off the frame with a single, then picked-up his first stolen base of the year by swiping second. Conway scored on a single down the left field line by Hector Tena and the Oaks led, 1-0.

The Giants tied the game with an RBI single by Derin McMains in the bottom of the third. The hit scored Dan Trumble, who became the first Giant base runner of the game by drawing a two-out walk. Trumble then stole his first base of the inning setting the stage for the McMains RBI. The game was tied, 1-1.

San Jose took the lead and a single by Trumble in the fifth inning. He drove in Bryan Carter, who led off the fifth and was hit by a Gerrit Simpson pitch. The Giants led, 2-1 through five.

While leading off the top of the ninth inning, Dan Phillips was down 0-2 in the count against reliever Wes Hutchinson. After swinging and missing at the strike two pitch, Phillips recovered to work the count to 2-2. Phillips then hit a line drive home run over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game, 2-2.

The plays that ended each half of the ninth inning began with the bases loaded. Justin Lincoln grounded into a double play to end the top of the ninth. Ryan Speier, who registered five strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief, struck out the last two batters in the bottom of the ninth: Dan Trumble and Derin McMains.

Daniel Ortmeier doubled with two out in the tenth off Alex Serrano and scored the winning run by diving behind catcher Dan Conway, whop was taking the throw from Oaks right fielder Dan Phillips.

Both starters pitched well. Visalia's Gerrit Simpson retired the first eight batters in the game and went seven innings with two runs on four hits and two walks allowed. Simpson struck out three.

San Jose's Jeff Cram went five innings and allowed one run on three hits with no walks. He struck out four.

Battle for First: If Bakersfield loses Thursday at Lake Eslinore, the Oaks and Blaze will be tied for first place in the California League's Northern Division going into a four game series this weekend at Recreation Park. The Oaks return to central valley to open a seven game home stand Friday night, with the first four games against the Blaze. Below are the expected pitching match ups for the series:
