July 11, 2003 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
Lancaster Ca. â In what was the largest margin of victory this season, the JetHawks exploded for 21 runs in a 21-1 win against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at the Hangar. Lancaster (47-43, 8-12) wins back-to-back games for just the second time in the second half, and take two of three in the series. Rancho (48-41, 8-11) has now lost four of six, in giving up a season high in runs and hits.
The damage started early, as the JetHawks struck for five in the first against starter Joe Torres. In his first Cal League appearance in over two months due to injury, the lefty loaded the bases with no outs, before Kyle Nichols doubled to score three runs. Jay Garthwaite added an RBI single, and Jason Gorman a run scoring groundout for the five run lead.
Garthwaite and Gorman continued to ravage Quakes pitching in the third. Garthwaite launched his 15th home run of the season, a two-run shot that cleared the scoreboard in left-center field. Gorman also added a two-run blast in the nine-run inning. It was the first homerun for the Palmdale native as a professional.
First baseman Matt Heath followed Gorman's homer with the first of his pro career, a solo blast to right field.
Garthwaite ended the night with a career high six RBI's, and his third four-hit game of the season. Gorman added his second home run â a solo shot to left in the sixth â and ended the night with five runs batted in.
Torres (3-3) was lit for seven runs (five earned) in one plus innings in taking the loss.
Overshadowed by the offense was the stellar pitching of John Castellanos. Entering the game in the second in relief of Bret Prinz on a rehab assignment, Castellanos (3-0) worked a season high seven innings, holding the Quakes to just one run and six hits. He has earned all three of his wins in his last four starts.
Prinz pitched a scoreless first inning, retiring the side in order on sixteen pitches with two strikeouts.
Mike Thiessen, Dan Uggla, and Nichols each added three hits. Nichols drove in four runs with three doubles, and Thiessen extended his hitting streak to a career high 13 games. Every member of the starting lineup reached base and scored at least one run.
The Inland Empire 66ers come to town for a three game weekend series that starts Friday. Keith Whatley (0-0, 6.75) makes his second start for the JetHawks against Elvis Perez (1-0, 1.50) of the 66ers in a 7:15 p.m. game. On Friday, July 11th, sport bottles will be given to the first 1,500 fans, courtesy of the Palmdale Water District, as the JetHawks take on the Inland Empire 66ers.
