Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves held Jackson to just two hits, but Abraham Almonte's crucial sixth-inning home run lifted the Generals to a 1-0 victory in game one of this five-game series at Trustmark Park Monday night. After getting swept at Birmingham, the loss extended the M-Braves losing streak to six games.
The M-Braves (3-8) had six hits on the night. The Generals (6-5) scored its lone run on just two hits. Mycal Jones and Luis Nunez each had two-for-three nights at the plate.
Aaron Northcraft faced the minimum through the first four frames before walking a couple of batters in the fifth. After a double steal to move runners to second and third, Northcraft got Brandon Bantz to pop out to third base and end the threat.
Jackson got on the board in the top of the sixth when Almonte launched a solo homer to lead off the inning, giving the Generals a 1-0 lead. The blast was Almonte's first long ball of the season.
Mississippi threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Jones singled and Phil Gosselin walked. Both runners advanced on Christian Bethancourt's sacrifice bunt. Christian Marrero was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, but Taijuan Walker fought back with a strike out and a foul out to end frame.
The M-Braves managed to get runners to second and third with one out again in the top of the seventh but couldn't score. A strikeout and ground out ended the threat.
Northcraft (0-2) tossed seven innings, giving up one earned run on just two hits and three walks. He struck out six batters. Pat Egan came on to work the final two innings in relief, giving up no hits and striking out one.
Walker (1-2) went six frames. He limited the M-Braves to three hits and four walks while fanning six batters on the night. Tyler Burgoon (S, 1) came on to work the final frame and record his first save of the season.
In game two of this five-game series, M-Braves right-hander J.R. Graham (0-1, 7.20) counters Generals righty Brett Shankin (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM. Gates open at 9:30 AM.
