Almonte Homers Twice As Generals Win Fourth Straight

JACKSON, TENN. - Denny Almonte is 16 for his last 29 at the plate and he homered twice Thursday night helping Jackson to an 8-1 thrashing of the Tennessee Smokies (10-12). James Paxton (2-0) provided the pitching by allowing just one unearned run on three hits and striking out nine in a season high six innings. The Generals (15-7) maintain their four-game division lead and have won four straight.

The Generals scored three runs in the first on an run scoring single from Rich Poythress and the first of two home runs from Almonte, a two run shot to right. The fifth of the year for Almonte.

The Smokies scored a run in the second inning to trim the lead to 3-1, but Johermyn Chavez doubled in three runs in the bottom of the third pushing the Jackson advantage to 6-1.

Almonte blasted his second homer to right in the fifth inning that gave Jackson a 7-1 edge. It was the sixth of the year for Almonte. Justin Bour homered for Tennesee in the seventh making the final score 7-2.

Almonte is on a 9-game hitting streak and was 3-for-3 with a walk. Almonte tied teammate Joe Dunigan for the league lead with six home runs. Rich Poythress was 1-for-4 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games. Dunigan added a double and two runs scored, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.

Paxton earned the win and Stephen Hensley pitched the final three innings, allowing a run and striking out four to get his first save. Jackson struck out 13 Smokies batters in the game. Tennessee starter Nick Struck (2-2) suffered the loss.

The Generals continue their five-game series with the Smokies on Friday night at Pringles Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The Generals will send RHP Taijuan Walker (2-0, 2.25) to the mound against a to be determined starter for Tenneseee. Rally will make an appearance at Pringles Park on Friday and it is Honor Roll Night. The Kimberlie Helton Band will put on a concert after the game.
