FORT MILL, S.C. - The Charlotte Knights announced today that RHP EDWIN ALMONTE placed third among International League pitchers in the Rolaids Relief Man contest.

The contest, which awards points for wins and saves to relief pitchers, runs throughout the season and pits all minor leaguers against each other and against other pitchers in their respective leagues.

Almonte, 25, notched a record-high 26 saves for the Knights season to give him 76 points, just shy of the two-way tie winners Lee Gardner of Durham and Brian Mallette of Indianapolis.

The New York native finished second in 2001 among all minor leaguers in this same contest with his 36 saves at Double-A Birmingham and won for the month of August with eight saves and a 2,13 ERA. White Sox farmhand Joe Valentine followed Almonte's lead this season and won the contest with his 36 saves for the Barons.

Almonte played for the International team in the 2002 MLB All-Star Futures Game in Milwaukee's Miller Park and was a member of the IL squad in the 2002 Triple-A All-Star Game in Oklahoma City. In 2001, he was named to the Southern League mid-season and post-season All-Star teams a well as the Topp's and Double-A All-Star teams.
