New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - 1B Luke Allen drove in three runs in a 3-4 performance, including the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Quebec Capitales 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. SS Bryant Nelson got the Jackals on the board with a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning as New Jersey took a 2-0 lead. That score held until Quebec cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by SS Jose Contreras. However, New Jersey regained the two-run lead at 3-1 in the bottom of the frame when Nelson scored from third when Quebec C Greg Stevens' throw to second base on an attempted steal by DH Juan Tejeda sailed into center field after the Capitales middle infielders failed to cover the base.
The teams exchanged runs once again in the sixth inning as Quebec DH Patrick D'Aoust singled home Stevens to make it a 3-2 game before a solo home run by Allen gave the Jackals a 4-2 advantage. In the top of the seventh, Quebec scored two unearned runs off Jackals reliever Hunter Davis to even the score at 4-4. With one out, RF Issael Gonzalez walked and Contreras singled to put runners on first and second. 3B Alex Nunez then reached to load the bases when Allen couldn't handle a grounder at first. 1B Patrick Deschenes then walked to pull Quebec within one before Stevens lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
With the score tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, back-to-back doubles by C Matt Lauderdale and Allen put New Jersey back on top 5-4. LF Andrew Larsen proceeded to add some insurance when he singled home Allen to cap the scoring at 6-4. In the top of the ninth, Jackals closer Rusty Tucker induced three straight groundouts as he picked up his league-leading 15th save of the season. The save was also Tucker's 29th as a Jackal, tying him with Mike Hartung for the career mark. New Jersey reliever Justin Barnes (3-0) picked up the win, hurling a scoreless eighth inning. Quebec's Ivan Blanco (2-4) allowed the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to take the loss. New Jersey starter Jorge Acosta pitched well, but didn't factor in the decision after allowing just two runs on seven hits in six innings. The Jackals and Capitales return to action on Tuesday night when New Jersey left-hander Isaac Pavlik takes the hill against Quebec's Luis Valdez at 7:05 p.m. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
