Allen Americans Hosting Alzheimer's Night this Friday
November 18, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Allen Americans News Release
Allen, Texas - On November 22, 2013 the Allen Americans are trying to purple out the rink with their first "Allen Americans Fight Alzheimer's" game. The Americans hope this night will help continue the movement to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer's and help advance the research to treat and prevent the disease.
Bringing awareness and support to the Alzheimer's Association is a natural fit for a hockey team as emerging evidence suggests that repeated mild traumatic brain injuries, such as those that can occur in contact sports like hockey, may be linked to a greater risk of a type of dementia called chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
"The September 28, 2013 Collin County Walk to End Alzheimer's raised over $156,000 in the fight against Alzheimer's said Collin County Chairman, said Kimberly J Munson. "I am excited that the Allen Americans continue the fight by hosting the first Allen Americans Fight Alzheimer's night on Friday, November 22, 2013 with a specialty jersey auction following the game. Every minute is a memory - do your part to help make and save memories."
Additionally, over the past 30 years, research has linked moderate and severe traumatic brain injury to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia years after the original head injury.
Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and is the only cause in the top 10 whose numbers keep increasing rather than decreasing. Additionally, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's every 68 seconds. Alzheimer's and dementia impact not only the person but their family and businesses. Caregiving is expensive, time consuming, and emotionally overwhelming.
The Allen Americans are encouraging everyone to help support this fight "off the ice." The Americans will be wearing specialty jerseys to commemorate the night and those jerseys will be auctioned following the game with proceeds raised going to the Alzheimer's Association. The jerseys are sponsored by Esteem Hospice, Arbor Hills Memory Care Community and The Law Offices of Kimberly J. Munson, PLLC. Additionally, the Americans have pledged $2 from each ticket purchased, using the code CHAMPS, will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association.
