Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers used great pitching and lots of hitting to defeat the Edmonton Capitals 7-1 before 2031 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The pitching staff combined to allow only one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts while the batters combined for 17 hits. With the victory the Vipers have won two in a row and improve to 35-14 overall and 9-1 in the second half. These two records lead both the Golden Baseball League and it's North Division.

Erik Dessau (6-1) was once again sharp for Calgary as he threw five and two-third innings while giving up only one run and striking out five for the win. Travis Hughes was solid out of the bullpen as he came in with the bases loaded in the sixth and didn't allow a run. Hughes ended up pitching two and a third innings scoreless with two strikeouts while Brian Oliver pitched a scoreless and hitless ninth frame with a punch-out. Trevor Caughey (1-3) took the loss in giving up four runs in six innings.

At the plate the top five in the lineup all had great games combining to go 14-23 in the game with all seven runs batted in, six runs scored, and five stolen bases. Caonabo Cosme led the way going three-for-four with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Fehlandt Lentini also had a home run, three hits, two stolen bases, two runs scored, a RBI, and the defensive play of the game with a sliding catch in shallow left-centerfield.

Calgary opened in scoring in the top of the first inning as Nelson Castro singled, stole second base, and scored on a two-out Colin Moro run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.

Lentini doubled the Vipers lead to 2-0 in the fourth frame as he launched a mammoth home run over the scoreboard behind the left field wall for his seventh big fly of the season.

In the fifth inning Calgary again doubled their lead as Moro singled and Cosme lined his third home run of the season to the opposite field for a 4-0 lead.

Edmonton got a run back in the bottom of the frame as newly acquired Carlos Duncan singled and with two outs both Matt Ceriani and Marcus Nettles picked up base hits to score Duncan for a 4-1 score.

The Snakes regained a four run lead in the top of the eighth as Dillon O'Krane singled, Lentini reached on a fielder's choice, stole second pass, moved to third base beautifully on a pitch in the dirt, and scored on a Castro RBI single for a 5-1 advantage.

Two more runs were added to the Vipers lead in the ninth as Jorge Mejia singled, stole second base, scored on a Cosme RBI double, and Rick Guarno plated Cosme with a base hit for a 7-1 lead.
