Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. -- For the first time in the five-year history of the Newark Bears, fans of the team will now be able to listen to all 126 games. The team announced today that an agreement has been reached with JBN Media to carry all the action via the internet available by logging on to NewarkBears.com. In addition, a minimum of 65 of the team's contests will be carried over the air on WMTR 1250 AM. All broadcasts will be produced by JBN Media and called by the Bears new Director of Broadcasting Jim Cerny. WMTR will broadcast mostly all of the team's home games while the Bears' road games can be heard online.
"It took some time but I am extremely pleased with the agreements we were able to reach with both JBN and WMTR," Bears Vice President/General Manager Chris Bryan said. "I am also pleased to welcome someone with Jim's credentials to our organization. He certainly will provide our fans an accurate, exciting and colorful description of the action on the field."
A 1987 graduate of Franklin and Marshall, Cerny comes to the Bears after calling New Jersey Jackals' games for the past five years. A member of the Jackal franchise from its inception in 1998, Cerny also served as the team's Media Relations Director and was the play-by-play broadcaster for the 2000 and 2002 Northern League All-Star Games. Well-versed in hockey as well, Cerny worked for the NHL's New York Islanders from 1994 to 2001, serving as the team's pre and post-game host for three seasons before picking up play-by-play duties for four seasons. His experience also includes time spent with the Northeast-10 Conference, SportsPhone and as a talk-show host on a number of New York stations. He currently writes for the New York Times as a freelance writer covering the NHL.
A 5,000-watt station based out of Morristown, WMTR plays adult standard music from the 50's and 60's and is currently the home to Syracuse University football and basketball and a full slate of area high school football and basketball games.
"We're looking forward to carrying the Bears on WMTR this summer," Program Director Chris Edwards said. "I feel as though our listeners will really enjoy catching some exciting baseball action over the air."
Newark opens its season on Thursday night May 1 as Bridgeport comes to town to begin a four-game series. The team, along with the newly-signed Rickey Henderson, will play its first seven games in the friendly confines of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Single-game, group and season tickets for the entire 2003 season are on sale now. For further information please call (973) 483-6900 or visit the team online at NewarkBears.com.
