Adirondack Phantoms News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY - Zach Boychuk scored the game's only goal and rookie goaltender Mike Murphy made 34 saves for his first career pro shutout as the Albany River Rats beat the Adirondack Phantoms 1-0 Thursday afternoon at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The final game of 2009 for both teams featured great energy and intensity, but even better goaltender as Adirondack veteran John Grahame went head-to-head with Albany rookie Mike Murphy. Both were solid in the first period, but the River Rats grabbed the lead on a Zach Boychuk power play goal at 16:02. Boychuk was taken down while shooting near the left side of the net, but he was able to poke his own rebound over goal line.
Adirondack out-shot Albany 15-6 in the second frame and 22-10 over the last two periods, but could not beat Murphy. The Phantoms pulled Grahame for the extra attacker in the final minute of play, but still could not solve the River Rats rookie as they lost 1-0.
Mike Murphy stopped all 34 shots he faced to record his first career pro and AHL shutout, helping Albany improve to 19-14-1-2 on the season. John Grahame was excellent in goal for Adirondack, making 23 saves on 24 shots, but took the loss as the Phantoms dropped to 15-15-2-0. Adirondack out-shot the River Rats 34-24 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play; Albany was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Adirondack is back in action for their first game of the 2010 calendar year on Saturday, January 2nd as they host the Norfolk Admirals for a 7:00 pm face off at the Civic Center. The first 5,000 fans entering the building will receive a free Phantoms T-shirt courtesy of Papa John's Pizza.
