December 31, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - In a Broome County tradition, the Binghamton Senators played host to the Norfolk Admirals in their annual New Year's Eve match at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
With a crowd of 4,414 present looking ahead to a new year, the B-Sens paid homage to the past as they wore Dusters throwback jerseys for the game.
19 seconds into the first period, rookie Brandon Svendsen buried his second goal of the season, unassisted, to give the B-Sens an early lead and build moment.
Midway through the second period, Norfolk tied the score as Martin Karsums fired a shot past Chris Holt for an unassisted tally of his own.
Less than three minutes later, the B-Sens answered as captain Denis Hamel blasted a slap shot from between the circles to beat Norfolk's netminder Dustin Tokarski top shelf, stick side to put the B-Sens ahead once more 2-1.
Into the third period, at 9:36 Norfolk would tie once more as Holt was caught out of postion, outside of the Binghamton crease after trying to clear the puck. Matt Lashoff capitalized by firing the puck into the wide open B-Sens net.
The teams would go to overtime, where just 1:31 into the extra stance Brian Lee, in only his second game back following a lower body injury blasted the puck past Tokarski to give the B-Sens a huge victory. Ryan Keller and Hamel registered the assists on the OT tally. It was Hamel's second point on the night.
Up next, the B-Sens hit the road for Hershey to face Bears in their first contest of 2010 on Saturday, Jan. 2.
