
Albany escapes with 88-87 win over Pittsburgh

ALBANY, NY - Kevin Pittsnogle's three-point basket gave Pittsburgh (2-22) a lead with less than a minute to play, but Albany tied the game with a three-pointer and converted a technical free throw with 27 second left to edge the Xplosion in Continental Basketball Association action at the Washington Avenue Armory, 88-87. Shawn Hawkins, who matched a career-high with 28 points for Pittsburgh, had an opportunity to give the Black and Gold the win at the buzzer, but his attempt was off the mark.
Despite trailing the contest early, the Xplosion would build a six-point lead in the fourth quarter. Albany would stay close thanks to buckets by T.J. Thompson and Eric Williams. Down the stretch the clubs traded big three-point baskets. Hawkins gave the Xplosion the lead with a three, but Thompson answered with one of his own to knot the contest. Pittnogle's three then made the score 87-84, but Thompson responded again with a three to tie it at 87-87 with 45 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Hawkins attempt for the lead was blocked and Xplosion Coach Jaren Jackson was then whistled for a technical foul which Williams converted for the final margin. Hawkins had another opportunity at the buzzer, but it was off the mark.
The Patroons took a quick lead in the ballgame, going on top, 7-2, before the Xplosion charged back to tie the contest. Albany, however finished the period on an 11-4 spurt to win the opening quarter, 20-15. Trailing by six points midway through the second frame, the Black and Gold stormed back, fueled by a 14-2 run, to claim the lead 38-33. Pittsburgh would go on to win the quarter, 22-20, but trailed at intermission, 40-37.
Albany won the opening quarter and Pittsburgh captured the second (22-20) and third frames (26-24). The teams halved the fourth quarter, 24-24. With the win, the Patroons earned 4.5 quarter points, while the Xplosion picked up 2.5.
Hawkins shot 11-18 from the field to net 28 points. Marvin Phillips chipped in with 15 points, while Pittsnogle and Drew Schifino finished with 10 points apiece.
Thompson led Albany with 26 points and Williams added 17.
The Xplosion and Patroons square-off again on Sunday evening, January 28 at 7:35 at the Armory.
