Albany Devils News Release
Prospect Challenge In The Books: The New Jersey Devils went 1-1 during the 2016 Prospect Challenge. The team defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 6-3, Saturday, but lost to the Boston Bruins, 4-3, Sunday. For the showcase, Brandon Gignac and Blake Speers led all scorers. Gignac had three goals and two helpers and Speers produced three goals and an assist.
"One of the things coming into this weekend was we want to see guys compete hard," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "For the most part we did that and not just kind of conceding the third period [Sunday]. We came out and found a way to make it a game."
Inside The Crease: The Devils traveled to Buffalo with three goaltenders: Evan Cormier, Ken Appleby and Mackenzie Blackwood. Cormier played the first period of both games and made 22 stops on 23 shots. Appleby, who played the second and third periods Saturday, made 18 saves on 21 attempts. Blackwood played the final 40 minutes Sunday and made 22 stops on 25 shots.
"I thought it was solid," Kowalsky said. "Cormier just played the single period both games. I thought he looked really sharp. I thought Ken came in and did a good yesterday. He wasn't too busy in the third. Mackenzie was really busy in two periods and made some big saves. Overall, it's tough for those guys because they are so used to being in a rhythm and playing games. It's a little disjointed in the fact they are playing a period here or two period there and that's their first exposure. I thought for the most part they all did a good job."
