Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-10, 45-50) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (15-11, 50-46) 5-3 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game series and nine-game homestand. The Bluefish scored five unanswered runs after trailing 3-0 to register their 19th come from behind win on the season and seventh when trailing by three runs or more. Bridgeport keeps pace with the Long Island Ducks atop the Second Half of the Freedom Division Standings after the Flock defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-2 in Ten Innings at TD Bank Ballpark.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (10-4) was victorious, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings of work, walking two, striking out seven and surrendering a home run. The All-Star leads the Atlantic League in wins with 10, the first pitcher to reach double-figures in victories in 2016 and also picked up his team-best tenth quality start on the campaign. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Brett Marshall registered a no-decision after tossing five scoreless innings, giving up four hits, walking and striking out two while throwing a wild pitch and hitting a batter. Tim Alderson (0-1) was tagged with the loss out of the Skeeters bullpen, not recording an out in four batters faced, surrendering four runs on two hits, walking two. Jose Veras came on in relief in the ninth and retired three batters in a row with a pair of strikeouts after allowing two hits to open up the frame to secure his team-leading eighth save overall.
Sugar Land took the early 1-0 lead against Albaladejo in the top half of the second inning on a one-out RBI single with the bases loaded off the bat of Albert Cordero, scoring Travis Scott with the game's first run after he began the rally with a base knock of his own. Albaladejo settled in and retired the next two batters in succession to limit the damage to a single run while the bags were still juiced. The visitors doubled the lead to 2-0 the next half inning on a leadoff solo home run to right by Travis Scott, his 12th big fly and 42nd run batted in of the season. The Skeeters took a 3-0 cushion in the top half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Barfield, allowing Delwyn Young to cross the plate. Barfield now has 59 RBI's, tying him for the second most overall in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Trailing by three runs, Bridgeport went to work against the Sugar Land bullpen, batting around in the home half of the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take their first lead of the night. Jose Cuevas led off with a walk, and Sean Burroughs followed with a single. Jonathan Galvez also reached via the free pass, and the bases were loaded with 'Fish and nobody out. Jose Gil drove home Cuevas and Burroughs with a two-run single, and Bridgeport was down 3-2. An Angelys Nina sacrifice bunt moved the tying run in Galvez just ninety feet away and the go-ahead in Gil up into scoring position. Luis Nunez gave Bridgeport a lead they would never relinquish when he laced a two-run single past the drawn in Skeeters infield, scoring Galvez and Gil, and just like that the fans were cheering in the Park City as their heroes took a 4-3 advantage. The Bluefish added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Gil brought in his third run of the game with a single that allowed Galvez to cross the plate for a 5-3 cushion. The Bridgeport bullpen did the rest, as Matt Iannazzo, Taylor Thompson, David Carpenter, and Veras did not allow a run in three innings of relief, striking out five to give Bridgeport their fourth consecutive victory overall.
