ERIE, PA - (3/17/09) The Erie RiverRats are proud to announce the return of one of their defensive stalwarts; Glenroy Watkins has signed a contract to return to play in Erie in 2009. An American Indoor Football Association All-star in 2008, Watkins is considered to be one of the finest linebackers in the AIFA. In 2008 "G-Roy", as he is known, was second in the league in sacks (11.5), third in the league in tackles for loss (13.5), and led the RiverRats in tackles (46) while also adding two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two safeties. "With a defense that is already strong, this just gives us the opportunity to take it to another level," said head coach Steven G. Folmar. "There is no doubt that the addition of G-Roy is going to make us a better team."
Glenroy Watkins (6' 2," 235) is a Brooklyn native and graduate of the Univeristy of Central Florida. Watkins played for the Osceola Ghostriders in 2007 and joined the RiverRats in 2008 where he garnered a strong following and his "All-Star" status. "I'm just happy to be back playing in Erie again in front of these great fans. And I'm asking for everyone in Erie to come out and support our team as we make a run at the championship."
"I am glad that Glenroy will be joining us this season because of his great on field presence certainly but I am also thrilled that with all the offers he had to play in other cities he chose Erie. It is a testament to our city, our fans, our organization and I know what a fine young man and positive influence he brings to our community," commented General Manager Jeff Moran.
The Erie RiverRats' home opener is scheduled for March 28th at 7 p.m. at the Tullio Arena versus the DC Armor.
