AFL Rookie of the Year Returns to Columbus
The Columbus Lions continue to make big roster moves, this time bringing back a familiar face with championship experience. Marvin Ross, the 5'11" 187-pound defensive back, returns to a Lions defense brimming with talent. For Ross, his last stint with the Lions ended in success. The former Florida A&M Rattler, who recorded 113 tackles and 14 pass breakups in his collegiate career, joined the Lions when they were a member of the Professional Indoor Football League. By year three, he was part of the Columbus Lions team that helped hang a banner in the Columbus Civic Center after their 64-38 win over the Richmond Raiders to win the PIFL Championship.
The following year saw Ross on the move as he would move on to the Arena Football League (AFL) to join the Cleveland Gladiators. His 84 tackles, 24 pass breakups, six interceptions and three touchdowns earned him AFL Rookie of the Year honors. In 2017, Ross joined the new National Arena League as a member of the Jacksonville Sharks where he appeared in six games and was a First Team All-NAL selection. His performance earned him a short stint on the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders for their minicamps. He would appear in two season games before being released and signing back with the Sharks once again racking up numbers. His 47 tackles and 19 pass breakups got him his second First Team All-NAL nomination.
In 2019, Ross found himself on the Atlantic City Blackjacks of the AFL. He would record 43.5 tackles, 12 pass breakups and four interceptions. Now in 2020, Ross returns back home to the Columbus to help the Lions ascend the ladder of the NAL. "It's great to have Marvin back where is all started," stated head coach Jason Gibson. "His professionalism and work ethic are what the Lions are all about. I know Coach Reed (defensive coordinator) is excited. Get your popcorn ready Columbus."
The Columbus Lions open the season Friday, April 17th at home against the defending NAL Champions the Jacksonville Sharks.
