Now in his sixth AFL season, Chicago OL/DL JOHN MOYER (6-3, 265, Eastern Illinois) is in search of his first ArenaBowl title. Moyer and the Rush, off to the best start in team history, a 6-2 game record. Chicago is ranked No. 3 in the AFL Writers Association's (AFLWA) weekly Top 8 Poll.
The Rush host the defending ArenaBowl champion Tampa Bay Storm (3-6), this Sunday on NBC at noon ET at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.
Heading into Week 10, the Rush defense ranks among the top five in eight different categories, including the No. 1-ranked pass defense (208.0 YPG), a fourth-place tie for fewest points allowed (45.0 PPG) and a second-place tie on opponents 4th-down conversions, allowing teams to advance on just three-of-ten attempts (30 percent). Chicago is also tied for the best turnover margin in the AFL (+11, Los Angeles) and has the second-best red-zone offense, scoring on 90.9-percent of opportunities inside the 10-yard line.
Chicago's top-ranked defense is led by Moyer and Rush teammate OL/DL JAMES BARON (3.0 sacks, 8 QBH). Moyer consistently excels at pressuring opposing quarterbacks (8 QBH) and kickers (3 blocked kicks) with his aggressive defensive style.
Q: When was the first time you ever played football?
A: The first time I ever played football was 5th grade back in Orangeville (Ill.) Grade School. I have been playing ever since. In fact, I have played every year except 1998.
Q: Do you play any other sports?
A: I played basketball and baseball in high school and junior college. I play softball occasionally in the offseason.
Q: How does the AFL compare/differ from 100-yard football?
A: It's a much faster game and it is a lot more of a one-on-one type of game. You are against your opponent rather than a scheme game.
Q: What is your pregame ritual?
A: My pregame ritual is to eat four hours before each game. I usually spend about an hour or so doing a crossword puzzle to take my mind off of things.
Q: What is your fitness schedule and eating habits?
A: I would not say I am a health nut. I like to eat. I am a food fan. But I watch what I eat. I usually spend two days a week during the season working on strength and cardio.
Q: What kind of music do you listen to?
A: I like to listen to Rap, classic rock and Jazz, but I listen to rap before games.
Q: What is your favorite sport movie?
A: Rudy.
Q: Describe your characteristics on and off the football field.
A: Off the field, I am a carefree person, not easily excitable, patient. On the field, I like to make things happen and have much more of a take-charge personality.
Q: What makes you a good teammate?
A: My devotion to the team. I treat my teammates like family and I like to win.
Q: What would you be doing if you weren't playing in the AFL?
A: I probably be doing something that would make me a lot of money so I could spent time fishing.
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
A: I will be done playing football and, hopefully, enjoying a business career in South Florida.
Q: What is your favorite moment from your AFL career to date?
A: Getting picked in the dispersal draft by the Rush.
Q: Which AFL arena do you think is the toughest to play in?
A: Arizona. Their fans are crazy and the team is always tough.
Q: Who is the toughest AFL player/coach you've faced in your career?
A: (Chicago teammate OL/DL) JAMES BARON. When Baron was in Nashville and I was with the Florida Bobcats, we played each other six times. He is by far the toughest player I've faced.
Q: What two AFL teams would you like to see in the ArenaBowl this year?
A: Chicago and New York. We need to get them back for knocking us out of the playoffs last year.
