AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK – Tampa Bay Storm quarterback SHANE STAFFORD, Orlando Predators fullback/linebacker IDRIS PRICE and Chicago Rush wide receiver/linebacker ETU MOLDEN have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 16 of the 2004 season.

Stafford (6-3, 200, Connecticut), who is in his third AFL season, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors by leading the Tampa Bay Storm (8-7) to a 59-51 victory over the AFLWA No. 4-ranked New Orleans VooDoo (10-5) on Sunday. Stafford completed 22-of-30 passes for 267 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. The victory was Tampa Bay's fifth consecutive, putting the defending champion in position for a playoff berth with a victory over Dallas this weekend. This marks first time that the former Husky has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Price (6-0, 240, New Haven), who is in his rookie season, helped lead the Orlando Predators (9-6) to a 65-41 victory over the New York Dragons (8-7) on Sunday. Price, an All-Rookie candidate, recorded 3.5 total tackles, 2.0 sacks and two interceptions (including 44-yard return for a touchdown.) The victory puts the Predators in position for a playoff berth with a victory over Los Angeles this weekend. This marks the first time that the former Charger has earned an AFL weekly honor and second time this season (Week 3).

Molden (6-2, 195, Montana) led the Chicago Rush (11-4) in all facets during their 53-37 top-four seed-clinching victory over the Indiana Firebirds (8-8) on Sunday. The Rookie of the Year candidate recorded four receptions for 26 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a rushing touchdown on offense. Molden had one kickoff return for 13 yards and recovered a kickoff in the endzone for a touchdown on special teams. On defense, he tallied two assisted tackles. This marks the first time that the former Grizzly has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Carolina's Rickey Foggie, Chicago's Jeremy McDaniel, Colorado's Damian Harrell, Dallas' Scott Dreisbach, Georgia's Leon Murray, Los Angeles' Tony Graziani, Orlando's Joe Hamilton and San Jose's Mark Grieb.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Carolina's D.J. Humphries, Chicago's John Moyer, Colorado's Hugh Hunter, Columbus' JoJo Polk, Georgia's Kevin Gaines, Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins, Philadelphia's Dwayne Missouri and Tampa Bay's Tremain Jones.

U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Carolina's Fred Vinson, Columbus' Sedrick Robinson, Detroit's Ron Carpenter, Georgia's Robert Thomas, Los Angeles' Kevin Ingram, Orlando's Cory Fleming, San Jose's Shalon Baker and Tampa Bay's David Saunders.
