Arceneaux, Paogofie brothers made big plays in Hawaii's comeback win
CHICAGO - Fresh off their thrilling 50-47 victory over Fresno in Week 1, the expansion Hawaiian Islanders dominate the arenafootball2 weekly player awards, announced today.
Islanders' quarterback DARNELL ARCENEAUX earns Offensive Player of the Week honors after accounting for six touchdowns, including the game-winning sneak with seven seconds remaining.
Down 47-44 with 52 seconds left, Arceneaux set up his winning score by driving the Islanders from their own 5-yard-line to the Frenzy one thanks to two completions to DARRELL JONES. Arceneaux, a former University of Utah standout, completed 19-of-36 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing eight times for 53 yards and a trio of scores.
Hawaii wide receiver/linebacker SAE PAOGOFIE is the Defensive Player of the Week for a five-tackle performance that also included a blocked kick. His brother Chris, also a wide receiver/linebacker for the Islanders, earns Week 1 Built Ford Tough recognition. CHRIS PAOGOFIE made four tackles, recovered a fumble and had 28 combined return yards in Hawaii's win. The brothers are graduates of Waianae High School in Waianae, Hawaii. Chris was a two-time All-American at Dixie State (Utah) Junior College while Sae played at the College of the Redwoods (Calif.).
Despite his team's loss, Fresno wide receiver/defensive back EDDIE KLANESKI made his return to the islands a memorable one in winning league Ironman honors for Week 1. The former two-time All-WAC defensive back at the University of Hawaii had 98 return yards in his af2 debut, including a 56-yarder that set up a go-ahead Frenzy touchdown in the fourth quarter. Klaneski totaled 53 receiving yards and a touchdown on offense, and made five tackles (one for loss) and broke up a pass on the defensive side of the ball.
Other candidates for Offensive Player of the Week included Hawaii's Jones and Richmond's KEVIN HARVEY. The other Defensive Player of the Week and Ironman of the Week candidates were Richmond's RICHARD HOLLAND and WALTER SHELTON, respectively.
Other Built Ford Tough team selections besides Paogofie were OL/DL STEVEN HAYNES (Richmond) and OL/DL PIETRO IOVINO (Roanoke). Every team's coaching staff selects up to five players who display a "get it done" attitude after each game. At the end of the season, the league will honor the "Built Ford Tough" Man of the Year, a player who will win a Ford truck at the end of the season.
