CHICAGO - Quad City offensive specialist IRA GOOCH, Tennessee Valley wide receiver/defensive back RONNEY DANIELS and Albany defensive specialist JOHN STUART have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 7 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gooch (6-foot, 190, Central Michigan), in his third season, wasted no time returning to form since moving back to the offensive specialist position for the Steamwheelers. In just second game back at OS, Gooch amassed 397 all-purpose yards in the 62-56 win over first-place Wichita. Gooch tallied 11 receptions for 189 yards with four touchdowns and he ran back eight kickoffs for 208 yards with one 57-yard touchdown. His 397 all-purpose yards total is just three shy of the all-time record set by San Diego's MARTY GRAHAM last season, and his 208 kickoff return yards total is the most by any player this season and the highest total of his career. Since moving back to the OS spot, Gooch has totaled 22 catches for 370 yards with eight touchdowns. This is Gooch's first-ever Offensive Player of the Week award.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Daniels (6-1, 215, Auburn), a rookie, helped the Vipers remain perfect on the season with his all-around efforts against the Bossier City Battle Wings. In the game Daniels caught seven passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns (all career highs) on offense and recorded 1.5 tackles, one interception and one pass break up on defense. His three touchdown receptions came from 30, 40 and 29 yards, including a circus catch on the 40-yard reception with 23 seconds left in the first half. His interception came midway through the fourth quarter and the Vipers scored two plays later to go up by 21 points. He is second on the team in receptions (19), first in yards (322) and first in touchdowns (7). He is also tied for the team lead with two interceptions. This is his first Ironman of the Week award.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stuart (6-1, 185, Indiana University - PA), in his second season, led a solid defensive effort for the Conquest in its 69-35 victory over Cincinnati. Stuart kept the explosive JAMES SCOTT (4th in af2 in receptions and receiving yards) in check all night, holding him to eight receptions and two scores on the night. In the fourth quarter, Scott caught what appeared to be his third touchdown of the game, before Stuart ripped the ball away for his second interception of the evening, sealing the win for Albany. Stuart finished the game with 6.0 tackles (four solo, one for a loss), one fumble recovery, two interceptions and four pass breakups. Stuart ranks 2nd in af2 with 17 pass breakups. This is the first ADT Defensive Player of the Week award for Stuart. His teammate in the secondary, defensive specialist ELIJAH BEAMON, won this honor in Week 2.
