KODAK, Tenn. - Jim Adduci's two-run home run in the fifth inning led the Tennessee Smokies to a 6-4 win over the Birmingham Barons in front of 3,553 at Smokies Park on Wednesday night. The Smokies improved to 32-34 on the season. Birmingham dropped to 29-36.
Birmingham attacked Tennessee starter Dae-Eun Rhee right from the beginning of the game. The Barons' first two batters singled and Corey Smith followed with a single to score Jose Martinez to give Birmingham an early 1-0 lead.
Down 3-0, the Smokies answered with three runs in the third inning. Rebel Ridling led off with a walk and Matt Cerda singled to put two runners on. Jae-Hoon Ha doubled to left field to score Ridling. Welington Castillo hit an infield single to score Cerda, and Ha would come in on a ground out by Justin Bour to tie the game at three. With the RBI ground out, Bour increased his league-leading RBI tally to 50.
Tennessee would strike again in the fifth, when Bour led off with a double to center and would come home on Adduci's home run. Junior Lake followed with a triple and scored on Mike Burgess' RBI ground out to put the Smokies ahead 6-3.
Rhee (4-2) struggled early, but limited the Barons to three runs on eight hits, while striking out four, over his five innings of work.
Tennessee's bullpen finished the game for the Smokies not allowing a run to score in their combined four innings of work. Casey Harman pitched two innings, allowing two hits and All-Star Frank Batista finished the game, going the final two innings, picking up his ninth save of the season.
The Smokies and Barons will continue their five-game series on Thursday afternoon at 12:00 noon at Smokies Park. Tennessee's Nick Struck (6-6, 4.42) will face-off against Birmingham's Nestor Molina (4-5, 4.66). For tickets and more information visit www.smokiesbaseball.com or call (865) 286-2300.
