San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Hall of Champions have named Surf Dawgs second baseman Adam Mandel their Player of the Month for July 2006. Along with two others, Mandel will be presented the Breitbard Stars of the Month Award by Team Manager Terry Kennedy on Sunday prior to the 5:05 p.m. start with the Fullerton Flyers.
In the month of July, Mandel improved on an already stellar .336 batting average in June by clubbing a .360 average in July. He leads the Surf Dawgs in stolen bases with eight and his nine doubles are fourth on the team. The 25-year old Mandel has also played in 59 of the Surf Dawgs 62 games thus far, second on the team behind outfielder Scott Goodman.
In this year's All-Star Game, Mandel was 5-for-5 with five doubles and two RBI's in a losing effort for the South team. A few days later, Mandel followed up his five-hit performance with yet another 5-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI on July 21. From July 17-23 Mandel was 8/17 (.471) with two doubles and three RBI to earn him the Player of the Week award.
Terry Kennedy will also present an award to Tom Whelan. The Over-the-Line World Championships have become a San Diego institution with the 53rd annual tournament played over two weekends in July. Tom Whelan became the all-time leader in career tournament titles when his team, The Pennant, won the Cannever Division (50-and-over). It was Whelan's 13th career victory, breaking a tie for 12. He has won four Cannever titles, two in Canardly (40 and over) and seven in Century (three players at least 30 and equally 100 years or more). Whelan played baseball at Crawford High, San Diego City College, San Diego State and four years in the Chicago Cubs organization. One of his teammates at Crawford was Dave Duncan, the St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach and former Major Leaguer.
Also receiving an award will be LaShawn Johnson. The 5-foot-9 guard/forward, a senior in the fall, led the Matadors to the best finish among San Diego schools in the 3A Division of the 20th annual San Diego Classic July 20-23 at sites around San Diego. The 3A division was the elite division for an event that is the largest high school girls basketball tournament in the nation with 376 teams. Mount Miguel was the runner-up after winning its pool and six games overall before falling to Diamond Ranch in the 3A final. Johnson's balanced game in scoring, rebounding and assists led the Matadors throughout the tournament. It was the first time Mount Miguel advanced to a San Diego Classic championship game.
