ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have signed rookie goaltender Alex Petizian (pictured) and defenseman Alan Mazur to one-year contracts for the 2010-11 season.

The 23-year-old Petizian went 45-29-10 in four years at St. Lawrence University (where former Aces goaltender Derek Gustafson also shined), establishing an all-time school record with a career 2.53 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. He stopped 26 of 30 shots in his professional debut for the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans last April 10 in a 5-2 loss to Syracuse. Petizian's best years at St. Lawrence came in his freshman and junior seasons, when he racked up 36 wins against just 18 losses.

He took over as the starter for the Saints midway through his freshman year, recording a shutout in his first collegiate start in October 2006 while earning second team all-ECAC honors and landing a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie team. Petizian was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week three times during his junior campaign, posted back-to-back shutouts in wins over Union and RPI to help St. Lawrence claim home ice in the 2009 ECAC playoffs, and finished with the third-best GAA in Saints history (2.18) and the sixth-best save percentage (.927).

Mazur, a 6-1, 185-pounder who spent three years playing junior-A hockey in the BCHL before enrolling at RIT, arrives in Anchorage having helped the Tigers reach the NCAA Frozen Four last spring in just their fifth season at the Division I level. For the second consecutive year, Mazur scored eight goals and 15 assists with 67 penalty minutes in 39 games as RIT stunned top-seeded Denver and the University of New Hampshire to reach the national semi-finals before losing to Wisconsin. Mazur, who turns 25 next month, left RIT as the school's all-time leader among defensemen with 27 goals, 22 of which came on the power play. He ranks third all-time on the school's Division I scoring chart with 99 points (27g-72a) in 137 career games for the Tigers.

Alaska opens its 2010-11 season with a pair of pre-season games against Stockton October 5-6 at 7:15 p.m. in Sullivan Arena, with a portion of the proceeds once again going toward Cancer Awareness programs within the state. The regular season begins October 15-16, as the Utah Grizzlies invade Anchorage at 7:15 p.m.
