Asheville Aces News Release
The Asheville Aces are deeply saddened to announce the loss of a member of our family. Assistant General Manager, David Dore passed away peacefully in his sleep at 2:11 a.m. on February 18, 2005. David was 55 years old.
David waged a brave battle against prostate, pancreatic and skin cancer since being diagnosed in July of this year, rarely missing a day of work. His passion for hockey was second to none and it was evident every day as he fought through tremendous pain to come to the rink - helping build the Asheville Aces into the organization it is today.
David possessed incredible knowledge of the game of hockey and the operations behind building a successful team. From sharpening skates to installing an ice surface, no one was better at it than David. His expertise in all things hockey will truly be missed by all. David's passing is a tremendous loss to the Aces organization but an even bigger loss to us personally.
Head Coach and General Manager Jeff Brubaker, who hired David as his first employee in March of 2004, reflected on David's passing with these words: "I'm crushed by this news. I've never seen a braver battle. He was a true inspiration to me."
David was heavily involved with the Red Cross as well as with Mission Hospital in Asheville. David also helped establish connections between the Aces and numerous local charitable organizations.
As a tribute to David, the Aces players will wear a sticker bearing David's initials on their helmets for the remainder of this season. The Aces will also present one of their players at the conclusion of each season with the David Dore Hockey Spirit Award. The recipient of this award will be the player who embodies the spirit and commitment David had to the sport of hockey.
Prior to joining the Aces, David owned and operated a boat retail business in South Florida. During his ten years in Florida, David also worked as a goal judge for the Florida Panthers of the NHL. Prior to moving to Florida, David raised the money to build a community ice skating rink in New Hampshire and was the Head Coach of Rutgers University Men's Hockey team. David also played hockey during his collegiate years at Boston University.
David is survived by his mother Doris, wife Pat, sister Paula, daughter Allicia, son Adam, and his two grandchildren, Amelia and Shara. Details on the memorial service will be released at a later date.
