Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, IDAHO - The Alaska Aces stretched their consecutive game point streak to 8, but the Idaho Steelheads won the game 3-2 in a shootout Saturday at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
The Aces played a tough first period, and got on the board at 8:15. An attempted clearing pass by Idaho ended up on the stick of Aces defenseman Steve Tarasuk at the right point. He hesitated, waiting for traffic to clear a bit, then rifled a shot through the remaining legs and sticks and through Steelheads goaltender Branden Komm into the net. The goal was Tarasuk's third of the season.
Idaho struck back early in the second period. With Aces defesnseman Dax Lauwers in the penalty box on a cross-checking infraction, Kellan Lain tipped home a shot from the blueline by Charlie Dodero at 1:02.
The Steelheads tallied once more just before the end of the period. Joe Basaraba carried the puck around the Alaska net, through the left corner and to the top of the left circle before unleashing his shot. It was blocked, but the puck ended up on the stick of Travis Ewanyk near the goal and he backhanded top-shelf with just 9 seconds to go in the period. It was his 8th goal of the season.
In the third period, Alaska kept battling and Idaho gave the Aces two power plays, one of which paid off for the visitors.
With Jake Rutt off on a tripping penalty, Alaska's Danny Moynihan fed the puck out to the blueline to Ryan Trenz. Trenz fired a shot but broke his stick while doing so. The puck, with less velocity, managed to get to Komm, who kicked to the left circle. That's exactly where Ruegsegger was stationed, and he banged the rebound in to tie the game at 2. It was his third goal of the season.
Plenty of close calls, but no scoring in overtime so the game went to a shootout. Aces outshot Idaho 4-2.
Caleb Herbert cashed in on the first attempt, but Alaska's Peter Sivak, Danny Moynihan and Tim Wallace were denied, and the Steelheads took the extra point.
Alaska took 4 out of a possible 6 points on the series.
Lukas Hafner finished the game with 34 saves in his first start this season. Komm had 29.
Alaska returns home for a series against the Toledo Walleye Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 9, 10 and 11 at the Sullivan Arena.
