Aces drop close game

San Angelo, Texas - August 19, 2008 - The San Angelo Colts used an improbable comeback to tie the first-round playoff series at one game apiece with the Alexandria Aces 6-5. The Aces were ahead 5-1 entering the seventh. With one out, Bryan Frichter reached on a bunt single. After a single by Wyn Diggs moved runners to first and second, the Aces committed their first costly error of the game. Pincher hitter and former Ace Albert Gonzalez hit a grounder to first. First baseman Jose Umbria tried to force out Diggs at second but hit him in the back, allowing Fricter to score and moving Diggs to third. The Colts cut the lead to two on a sacrifice fly by Tyrone Pendergrass. In the eighth, the Colts moved within one. B.J. Litchfield came in to pitch the eighth and gave up a leadoff double to Jose Torres. After Torres stole second, Andres Rodriguez walked on four pitches. Litchfield was knocked out of the game after an RBI single by Aaron Cone. Juan Carlos Ovalles relieved Litchfield and got the last three batters of the eighth out. In the ninth, Gonzalez walked to leadoff the inning. Pendergrass then tried to bunt Gonzalez over to third. Pendergrass' bunt went back to Juan Carlos Ovalles threw to second baseman Luis Guance, who was covering first, but the ball went into right field. Right fielder Selwyn Langaigne over-threw the ball to second base allowing Gonzalez to tie the game at five. John Anderson hit a grounder to Juan Carlos Ovalles, who then tried to catch Pendergrass off of second base. Pendergrass was able to get back to second ahead of the tag, and everyone was safe. After a Torres fielder's choice forced out Pendergrass at third, Rodriguez hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases. Aaron Cone was hit by the first pitch by Juan Carlos Ovalles to force in the winning run and force a Game 3 Wednesday. Game time will be 7:05 with Alexis Sosa going for the Aces against Chris Weast.
