Aces Drop Close Game In Columbus
March 1, 2005 - SPHL (SPHL)
Asheville Aces News Release
The Asheville Aces lost 4-2 to the Columbus Cottonmouths but remain 10 points behind idle Huntsville for the remaining playoff spot in the SPHL.
The Cottonmouths struck early with a goal from Tylor Keller at the 1:45 mark of the opening period. Aces goalie Mark Scally stopped the remaining 11 shots thrown at him in the first, but was unable to contain the Cottonmouths who led off the second period with another early goal. This time it was Lorne Misita who beat Scally at 2:01.
Asheville rookie Eldon Cheechoo scored his second goal in as many games at 12:11 of the second period to bring the Aces to within one goal. The third period was scoreless until the 9:39 mark when Tim Green added one for the Cottonmouths on the power play. But Asheville's Billy Cameron added a power play goal of his own at 17:31 to once again bring the Aces within one. With Scally pulled for the extra attacker, however, Columbus' Orrin Hergott potted an empty netter to make the final score 4-2 in favor of the Cottonmouths.
Columbus goalie Chad Rycroft got the win with 24 saves on 26 shots, while the Aces' Scally got the loss with 32 stops on 36 shots. The Aces return home for a Thursday night match up with the Huntsville Havoc and meet the Cottonmouths again at home on Friday. Both games are 7:30 starts at the Asheville Civic Center. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office or by calling Ticketmaster at (828) 251-5505.
